The cross stitch, step by step

We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the cross stitch.
This stitch creates a structured motif by crossing two diagonals to form a neat, regular X on the fabric.
1 – Form the first diagonal
Bring the needle up at A at the bottom left of the motif. Insert it at B at the top right to form the first diagonal. Bring it up at C at the bottom right.
2 – Form the second diagonal and complete the cross
Insert the needle at D at the top left to cross the first diagonal and complete the X. Pass the thread to the back of the fabric and secure it under the stitches already worked. If the line includes further crosses, bring the needle up at the position of the next one and repeat from step 1.

FOR RIGHT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Hold the needle in your right hand. Complete each cross fully before moving to the next.
FOR LEFT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Hold the needle in your left hand. Complete each cross fully before moving to the next.

Tips for a perfect cross stitch

Tip 1

Consistent direction: Always work the same diagonal first on every cross in the motif to achieve a uniform, homogeneous result.

Tip 2

Precise placement: Insert and bring up the needle at exactly the same intersections from one stitch to the next to maintain a clean alignment across the whole surface.

Tip 3

Balanced arms: Ensure both diagonals are of equal length to form a well-proportioned, symmetrical X.

Tip 4

Thread tension: Pull the thread gently at each stitch to produce flat, well-laid crosses without puckering the fabric.

Tip 5

Number of strands: Adjust the number of strands to the desired size of the cross and the weight of the fabric for a balanced, well-covered result.

Result

On the front: A series of regular, well-aligned crosses forming a structured, repeating motif.

On the back: A series of small straight or slightly diagonal stitches, depending on the progression method used.

The cross stitch, an essential stitch for learning hand embroidery

The cross stitch is used to cover entire surfaces, outline shapes, or build precise, repeating graphic motifs.
It holds a central place in traditional embroidery for working samplers, monograms, and geometric compositions.
It appears in folk embroideries the world over, wherever the regularity of the stitch creates a strong ornamental effect.

The cross stitch: a structured stitch formed by two crossed diagonals.
It is built in two stages — a first diagonal, then a second that crosses it — each cross being completed fully before moving to the next.
This methodical construction produces dense, balanced surfaces that read clearly at any scale.
It is one of the most widely taught and practised stitches in hand embroidery across all textile traditions.

Why learn the cross stitch?
• master the construction of a structured stitch worked in two stages
• control the consistent direction of the diagonals across all crosses in the motif
• develop consistency of motion and precision of placement
• build the foundation for many derived stitches and filling techniques
