The zigzag chain stitch, step by step
We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the zigzag chain stitch.
This variation alternates loops on either side of two lines to create a zigzag line.
1 – Form the first loop
Bring the needle up at A on the left line and hold the thread under your thumb. Insert the needle back into the same point A while keeping the thread under the needle, bring it up at B lower down on the right line, and pull gently to form the first loop.
2 – Form the opposite loop
Insert the needle inside the previous loop at B while keeping the thread under your thumb. Bring it up at C lower down on the left line, making sure the needle passes over the thread, and pull gently to form the next loop, oriented in the opposite direction.
3 – Continue alternating and finish
Insert the needle inside the previous loop at C, bring it up lower down on the right line while keeping the thread under the needle, and pull gently. Continue alternating right and left to build the zigzag line. To finish, secure the last loop with a small straight stitch and pass the thread to the back of the fabric.
FOR RIGHT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Hold the needle in your right hand. Work from top to bottom or right to left, keeping the thread under your left thumb at each loop formation.
FOR LEFT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Hold the needle in your left hand. Work from top to bottom or left to right, keeping the thread under your right thumb at each loop formation.
Tips for a perfect zigzag chain stitch
Loop principle: Each loop is formed by inserting the needle inside the previous loop, which creates the characteristic zigzag linking.
Entry point: Insert the needle precisely inside the previous loop to ensure regular alignment and prevent the loops from shifting.
Thread position: Always keep the thread under the tip of the needle before pulling to preserve the open shape of each loop.
Tension: Pull gently towards you after each loop to avoid flattening the motif and to keep the line light.
Consistency: Keep an even spacing between the two lines and a uniform loop length to achieve a well-rhythmed zigzag.
Result
On the front: A decorative zigzag line of alternating loops forming a flexible, regular motif.
On the back: A succession of small stitches corresponding to the anchor points.

The zigzag chain stitch, an essential stitch for learning hand embroidery
The zigzag chain stitch is used to create rhythmic, structured lines that bring movement and lightness to compositions.
In traditional embroidery, it is valued for emphasising outlines, drawing decorative borders, and structuring graphic motifs.
It appears in stylised stems, interlacing patterns, and ornamental lines where the alternating loops create a dynamic effect.
The zigzag chain stitch: a variation of the chain stitch.
Its construction relies on the alternation of linked loops on either side of two parallel lines.
This regular alternation creates dynamic, decorative lines with a characteristic subtle relief.
It is particularly well suited to graphic compositions and ornamental borders worked in hand embroidery.
