The Double lazy daisy stitch, step by step
We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the Double lazy daisy stitch.
This variation of the lazy daisy stitch creates a layered motif by nesting two loops, adding more depth and decorative richness.
1 – Form the first loop
Bring the needle up at A and hold the thread under your thumb. Insert the needle back into the same point A, bring it up at B at the desired distance while keeping the thread under the needle, and pull gently to obtain a wide, regular first loop. Insert the needle at C along the axis of the tip to anchor it.
2 – Form the second loop
Bring the needle up slightly below point A. Insert it at the same starting point, bring it up inside the first loop while keeping the thread under the needle, and pull carefully to form a smaller element nested within the first. Insert the needle at the anchor point to secure.
3 – Check and finish
Adjust both loops so they are well centred within each other. Check the thread tension without pulling too hard. Pass the thread to the back of the fabric and secure it under the stitches already worked.
FOR RIGHT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Hold the needle in your right hand. Rest your left thumb on the thread to keep each loop in place as you bring the needle up.
FOR LEFT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Hold the needle in your left hand. Rest your right thumb on the thread to keep each loop in place as you bring the needle up.
Tips for a perfect double lazy daisy stitch
Anchor point: Always insert the needle into the same hole to ensure a regular layered effect.
Thread ease: Pull gradually to preserve the openness of both elements.
Proportions: The first loop must be wide enough to comfortably accommodate the second.
Alignment: Centre the second element along the axis of the first for a structured result.
Colours: Using two threads in contrasting shades highlights the layering and adds visual interest.
Result
On the front: Two nested loops forming a structured motif with a subtle raised effect.
On the back: Clean anchor stitches corresponding to the attachment points of both formations.
