The diamond stitch, step by step

We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the diamond stitch.
This decorative stitch forms a succession of even diamond shapes, creating a graphic and structured line.
1 – Place the first V
Bring the needle up at A on the left line. Insert the needle at B, directly opposite A on the right line. Bring it up at C, lower down, at the centre between the two lines. Pass the thread under the tip of the needle. Pull gently to form the first V — this will become the upper half of the first diamond.
2 – Form the right side of the diamond
Place the thread upwards. Insert the needle at D on the right line, lower down. Bring it up at E, directly opposite, on the left line. Pull to form a straight stitch.
3 – Close the diamond and begin the next
Place the thread upwards. Insert the needle at C. Bring it up at E. Pull to form a straight stitch.
4 – Continue the succession of diamonds
Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 along the full length of the line, maintaining an even spacing. Secure the last V with a small straight stitch. Pass the thread to the back of the fabric and secure it under the previously worked stitches. ___________

Tips for a perfect diamond stitch

Tip 1

Forming the diamond: Each diamond is built with two successive V shapes — the first forms the upper side, the second closes the lower side — before moving on to the next diamond.

Tip 2

Two parallel lines: Always work between two parallel lines — whether drawn or printed — to ensure perfectly aligned and symmetrical diamonds.

Tip 3

Aligning the next stitch: Always insert the needle directly opposite the previous point so that the diamonds remain symmetrical and even.

Tip 4

Diamond height: Maintain an identical height between each diamond to achieve a consistent graphic line throughout.

Tip 5

Thread tension: Pull gently and evenly at each V to preserve the clean, angular shape of the diamonds.

Result

On the front: a decorative line composed of even, connected diamond shapes.

On the back: a succession of small stitches at the anchor points.
