The double whipped running stitch, step by step
We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the double whipped running stitch.
This variation creates a decorative raised line through two rows of running stitches linked by an alternating whipping in zigzag.
1 – Working the first row of running stitches
Bring up the needle on the right side of the fabric at A, then insert at B to form a running stitch. Repeat following the line to obtain a regular row.
2 – Working the second row facing the first
Bring up the needle on the right side of the fabric on a line parallel to the first. Insert opposite each stitch to form a second regular row, keeping the same spacing.
3 – Working the alternating whipping
Bring up the needle at C. Turn the needle around and slide the eye under a stitch on the first row without piercing the fabric, so as not to damage the threads, then under a stitch on the second row, alternating regularly. Progress in this way forming a zigzag between the two rows. Pass to the wrong side and secure under the stitches already worked.
FOR RIGHT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work naturally from right to left, alternating the passes under each stitch.
FOR LEFT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work from left to right, keeping the same alternation of the whipping.
Tips for a perfect double whipped running stitch
Row regularity: Work running stitches of the same length on both rows for a balanced pattern and a regular zigzag.
Spacing: Keep a consistent distance between the two rows to structure the zigzag and give it regularity.
Direction of whipping: Always pass the thread in the same direction from one row to the other to maintain a regular, consistent line.
Thread tension: Pull the thread gently to lay the whipping without distorting the running stitches or puckering the fabric.
Needle use: Always use the eye of the needle to slide under the stitches — never the tip — to protect the base threads throughout the whipping.
Result
On the front: A regular zigzag linking two parallel rows, forming a structured, lightly raised decorative line.
On the back: Two parallel rows of running stitches with no trace of the whipping.
