The magic chain stitch, step by step

We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the magic chain stitch.
This variation is worked with two different-coloured threads threaded simultaneously, forming a line of chained loops whose colours alternate with each stitch.
1 – Form the first loop
Thread two different colours through the needle eye. Bring the needle up at A. Hold the first colour under the needle and leave the second free. Insert at A and bring up at B. Pull gently to form the first loop.
2 – Alternate the colours
Insert the needle into the previous loop. Bring up at C, this time holding the opposite colour under the needle. Pull to close the new loop. The colour changes with each formation.
3 – Close the row
Continue alternating along the full length of the design line. Once the last stitch is reached, pass both threads to the back of the fabric and secure them under the stitches already worked. ___________ FOR RIGHT-HANDERS: Work the stitch from top to bottom or right to left, keeping the thread alternation consistent.

Tips for a perfect magic chain stitch

Tip 1

Thread management: Keep one thread under the needle while the other rests freely to the side.

Tip 2

Alternation: Switch threads at each stitch to achieve a balanced, rhythmic colour effect.

Tip 3

Entry point: Always insert into the previous loop to maintain continuity along the row.

Tip 4

Tension: Pull each thread separately after forming the loop to balance both colours evenly.

Tip 5

Loop size: Work slightly wider loops to better control the position of both threads.

Result

On the front: A line of loops alternating two colours, creating a rhythmic decorative pattern.

On the back: A series of anchor stitches corresponding to each loop.
