The two-colour stem stitch, step by step
We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the two-colour stem stitch.
This variation of the stem stitch is worked with two threads of different colours threaded together, forming a twisted line in which each colour remains clearly visible.
1 – Preparing the threads
Thread two different coloured threads through the eye of the needle. Decide which colour will sit above the line and which will sit below, then maintain this position throughout the work.
2 – Working the first stitch
Bring up the needle on the right side of the fabric at A, at the start of the line. Insert at B on the line, then bring up between the two threads at C, midway between A and B, keeping one thread above and the other below the line. This first stitch forms the starting half-stitch.
3 – Continuing the line
Insert further along the line, then bring up the needle at the end of the previous stitch, taking care to pass between the two threads. Always maintain the same position of the colours and guide the threads to preserve the twisted effect. Continue in this way to the end of the line. Pass to the wrong side and secure under the stitches already worked.
FOR RIGHT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work the two-colour stem stitch from left to right.
FOR LEFT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work the two-colour stem stitch from right to left.
Tips for a perfect two-colour stem stitch
Colour choice: Use two contrasting colours to highlight the two-colour effect and make the twist clearly visible.
Consistent thread position: Always keep the same colour above the line and the other below to ensure visual consistency throughout the line.
Thread control: Hold both threads under your thumb downwards, on the same side of the line, exactly as for the standard stem stitch.
Needle path: Bring up the needle precisely at the end of the previous stitch, passing between the two threads to avoid crossing them.
Thread tension: Pull both threads without excess to maintain a clean relief and prevent the colours from blending together.
Result
On the front: A regular, lightly raised two-colour twisted line, with two distinct colours that intertwine harmoniously.
On the back: A succession of small straight stitches similar to those of the standard stem stitch.
