The Blanket stitch flower, step by step
We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the Blanket stitch flower.
This stitch is built from a succession of blanket stitches worked around a central circle, with the needle inserted outwards to form a floral motif with regular petals.
1 – Work the first blanket stitch
Bring the needle up at A on the inner circle. Insert it at B on the outside of the circle, keeping the thread held down with your thumb. Bring it back up at C on the inner circle, sliding the needle tip under the thread. Pull the thread towards you to form the first petal.
2 – Continue the flower
Insert the needle again on the outside of the circle, keeping the thread held down with your thumb. Bring it back up on the inner circle, sliding the needle tip under the thread. Pull the thread towards you to form the next petal. Distribute the stitches evenly all the way around the circle.
3 – Finish the motif
When the circle is complete, insert the needle at the base of the last stitch to secure the thread. Pass the thread to the back of the fabric and fasten it under the stitches already worked. ___________
Tips for a perfect blanket stitch flower
Always bring up on the inner circle: Always bring the needle up exactly on the inner circle — this ensures all the petals start from the same outline and the flower remains regular.
Direction of the stitches: Angle each stitch outwards from the circle so the loops open naturally around the centre and form well-opened petals.
Thread position: Always keep the thread under the needle tip before pulling through so each loop forms correctly.
Distribution of the petals: Spread the stitches gradually and evenly around the circle to achieve a harmonious and balanced floral motif.
Thread tension: Pull the thread with moderate tension to maintain relief in the petals — too tight a pull flattens the loops and detracts from the floral effect.
Result
On the front: A ring of blanket stitches forming a flower with regular, well-opened petals.
On the back: A succession of small stitches arranged around the centre of the motif.

The Blanket stitch flower, an essential stitch for learning hand embroidery
The blanket stitch flower makes it easy to create decorative floral motifs for stylised flowers within botanical arrangements.
The centre of the flower can be enriched with a decorative stitch — several knot stitches, a whipped spider web stitch, or a bead — to enhance the floral effect.
By varying the number and length of the petals, you can create flowers with very different characters in traditional embroidery.
The blanket stitch flower: a variation of the blanket stitch.
Its construction is based on radiating blanket stitches worked around a common centre, with the needle angled outwards to form open petals.
This arrangement creates a simple, regular and instantly recognisable floral motif.
It is greatly valued in hand embroidery for creating delicate flowers and decorative botanical compositions.
