The double laced running stitch, step by step

We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the double laced running stitch.
This variation combines two rows of running stitches linked by an alternating lacing that creates a decorative undulating line.
1 – Working two rows of running stitches
Work a first regular row of running stitches following the line. Work a second row facing it, keeping a consistent spacing between the two rows.
2 – Working the lacing
With a second thread, bring up the needle at A. Turn the needle around and slide the eye under a stitch on the upper row without piercing the fabric, so as not to damage the threads. Then pass under the corresponding stitch on the lower row in the same way. Continue alternating from one row to the other to link the two rows.
3 – Finishing the motif
Continue the lacing along the full length keeping a consistent tension. Pass to the wrong side and secure under the stitches already worked.

FOR RIGHT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work naturally from right to left, alternating the passes under each stitch.
FOR LEFT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work naturally from left to right, keeping the same alternation of passes.

Tips for a perfect double laced running stitch

Tip 1

Running stitch regularity: Both rows must be regular to achieve a harmonious, well-balanced lacing.

Tip 2

Row spacing: Keep a consistent distance between the two rows to structure the motif and achieve regular undulations.

Tip 3

Lacing alternation: Pass the thread successively under the stitches of both rows without ever piercing the fabric to preserve the suppleness of the relief.

Tip 4

Needle use: Always use the eye of the needle to slide under the stitches — never the tip — to protect the base threads throughout the lacing.

Tip 5

Thread tension: Pull the thread gently to preserve the suppleness of the relief and avoid distorting the running stitches.

Result

On the front: A regular undulating line linking two parallel rows with a supple decorative effect.

On the back: Two regular rows of running stitches, with no trace of the lacing.
