The laced running stitch, step by step

We guide you here, step by step, to embroider the laced running stitch.
This variation combines a row of running stitches with an alternating lacing that creates a supple line with a flowing, undulating movement.
1 – Working a row of running stitches
Work a regular row of running stitches following the line, keeping a consistent length and spacing throughout.
2 – Working the alternating lacing
With a second thread, bring up the needle at A. Turn the needle around and slide the eye under the first running stitch without piercing the fabric, so as not to damage the threads. Continue alternating the passes under each stitch, from bottom to top then from top to bottom, to create the undulating movement.
3 – Finishing the motif
Continue along the full length keeping a consistent movement and thread tension. Pass to the wrong side and secure under the stitches already worked.

FOR RIGHT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work naturally from right to left, alternating the passes under each stitch.
FOR LEFT-HANDED EMBROIDERERS: Work naturally from left to right, keeping the same alternation of passes.

Tips for a perfect laced running stitch

Tip 1

Running stitch regularity: A regular running stitch base is essential for an even, well-rhythmed undulating movement.

Tip 2

Lacing alternation: Follow the alternation of the thread passes carefully to maintain a consistent undulating effect along the full length.

Tip 3

Thread tension: Pull the thread gently on each pass to preserve the light relief without flattening the movement.

Tip 4

Needle use: Always use the eye of the needle to slide under the stitches — never the tip — to protect the base threads throughout the lacing.

Tip 5

Thread choice: Use a contrasting or slightly thicker thread than the base to highlight the decorative undulating effect.

Result

On the front: A supple, gently undulating line formed by the thread passed alternately under each running stitch.

On the back: A regular row of running stitches, with no trace of the lacing.
